Dinosaurus in Bulgaria?

No, dinosaurs haven't been found so far in Bulgaria. That doesn't mean there're no fossils from that group of animals. We believe that if we are strenuous enough, we will find them! But in fact in our country we have several finds of giant marine reptiles from that time - Mosasaurus, Ichthyosaurs (many people think that they're dinosaurs, but they're reptiles from other order - Squamata, Varanoidea). During Cretaceous, the territory of our country was the north coast of Tetis Ocean. Limnic, graben environment was changed to shallow Epicontinental Sea in late Cretaceous. There were trench island systems with volcanic activity. These geography conditions and the hot tropical weather were one of the best habitats for the marine reptilians. The water was rich of fishes, corals, ammonites and other mollusks - plenty of food for every one. It didn't matter how big and hungry you were. The sediments from that period appear at many places in Bulgaria like " Stara planina " mountain, along the riverside of river " Vit " near villages Riben, Komarevo and Somovit. These are the regions where fossils of marine reptiles are most abundant.
V.Tzankov wrote the first article for finds of marine reptiles (Mosasauridae) in 1939. In the issue he described in details the area of finds near village Somovit and the variety of species. Village Somovit is situated in central north BG, where river Vit pours into river Danube. The Cretaceous chalk is very well preserved. In the sediments you can find echinids, mollusks shells, teeth from Mosasauridae and other fossils from that period.
Near village Breste (west Stara Planina Mountain) is another place of finds. In the end of eighties Soitcho Breskovski and Vasko Popov had found part of a jaw and other bones from marine reptiles unfortunately it's not still described. We're working on that problem with co-operation of John W. M. Jagt (Natuurhistorish Museum Maastricht, Holland ), Eric Mulder and Jim Martin. Up to now there were determine mosasaurs vertebra, piece of a jaw with tooth / M. aff hoffmani/, but some of the other bones could be of Plesiosaurus or may be even the first Bulgarian dinosaur...
